Run the Red Light?

Key Bible Verse: Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! (Psalm 119:5). Bonus Reading: Psalm 119:1-8

My wife and I used to make frequent trips to Chicago's O'Hare Airport. Often it seemed as if some little creature went before us turning the traffic lights red all along the way, particularly when we had left later than we should have. If no one was coming, the temptation was to go through despite the red signal. We could have rationalized such behavior by arguing that we had to get to the airport before take-off, especially since I was on a mission for the Lord.

But then, once we had resisted the temptation and had driven under pressure, we would arrive only to find that the flight had been delayed. I could almost hear the Lord gently saying, "I knew it all the time. Why didn't you trust Me instead of getting so upset?"

Had I gone through red lights, broken the law, tried to justify my behavior, and then found my disobedience was needless, I would have been forced to conclude that being governed by the circumstances of the moment was unjustified. We should note, however, that even if the disobedience does seem to work out favorably, it is still wrong and will be judged by God.

—Hudson T. Armerding in The Heart of Godly Leadership

Personal Challenge:

  • What are some daily situations in which obedience seems hard to come by? Are you ready to obey?

Thought to Apply: It is our business to see that we do right; God will see that we come out right.
