I read from the Bible that summer—searching but still struggling. I happened across a verse that practically jumped off the page at me (today's Key Bible Verse).

Wow! If God really cares about my drinking problem, my messed-up marriage, and my lousy pitching, He must really love me. That thought hit me hard.

On August 25, I woke up thinking about that verse, asking myself, Why am I so reluctant to give God control of my life? It wasn't as though I was doing such a great job. I'd turned it into a terrible mess, while God had never made a mistake. What were the odds He was going to make His first mistake on me? He could easily do better with my life than I was doing.

I looked over at Christine lying next to me in bed, awake. "I can't run from God anymore," I told her. "If I wait til I'm good enough, it'll never happen. So He'll just have to take me the way I am. I'm ready to give Jesus control of my life."

What I didn't know was that Christine had reached a similar point in her spiritual struggle. She awoke that morning and came to the same decision on her own. "Me, too," she said.
