Q. What was Payne Stewart [the pro golfer who died in his plane last October 25], like?
A. I met Payne at a 1982 event in Mississippi that he won. In the post-victory interview he announced that the [PGA] Tour needed more blond-haired, blue-eyed guys. I remember thinking, Who in the heck is this guy? For many years Payne Stewart was first in Payne Stewart's life.
How did coming to Christ change that?
We started to see a man who as interested in people as in golfwho played to win, but truly loved others. We saw his pride and occasional cynicism and sarcasm begin to soften. Payne became gracious in victory and defeat. Only God can do that; only God can change hearts.
Paul Azinger, pro golfer, was a friend of Stewart's.
