Key Bible Verse: Be self controlled and alert … resist … (Peter 5:8-9). Bonus Reading: Psalm 55:16-23

Malcolm Muggeridge was elected by the students at Edinburgh University as their rector. Some months after his installation, the Students' Union requested the university to make contraception available through the university infirmary. Muggeridge refused; a conflict ensued:

"I was subjected to abuse, to the point that I found it necessary to resign. In a farewell sermon, I explained why I had done what I had and received some private thanks, but none publicly. The conclusion I came to was that in a libertine society any attack on libertinism is anathema."

Some conflicts are so deep and fundamental that they simply can't be resolved.

—Leighton Ford in Transforming Leadership

Personal Challenge:
  • What are you willing to stand for?

Thought to Apply: I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions.

—LILLIAN HELLMAN (playwright)
