Truck-Stop Theology

Key Bible Verse: "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more" (Jeremiah 31:34b). Bonus Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-37

Gordon Clinard tells of stopping at a truck stop where he was served by a rather rough-looking waitress who had a tattoo on her arm that said "Charlie." So he struck up a conversation and said, "How's Charlie?"

She said, "Pardon?"

He said, "How's Charlie?"

"Oh," she said, "that. Well, that was years ago and I was high and it was night and—. You know, I haven't seen him since." But then she went on to say, "But you know, I'm married to a wonderful man named Richard. We've been married for ten years, and he's great."

Clinard said, "What does Richard think about Charlie?"

She said, "Oh—you know—from the first time I explained it, he's never mentioned it again. I don't think he even sees it anymore."

That is the way Christ loves the church. He doesn't love us only if we're perfect. His love covers our sin, and He doesn't see our sin anymore. He sees us as without blemish. Husbands too, have to love their wives just as they are. Even if you think she's too talkative or heavy or inhibited, your role is to love her without criticism, comparing or abuse. Our mates' faults have to be covered and forgotten by love.

—Bob Russell in Marriage by the Book

Personal Challenge:

  • Who could benefit from you "covering over" a fault by your love?

Thought to Apply: Our God has a big eraser.
