Every morning, when I take our children to school, we go through the same routine. After we get in the car, we pray about the day. Then as we drive the few miles to the schools they attend, we talk about their plans for the day. When I drop them off, I make three statements. First, I tell each one how much I love them and that I want them to have a great day. Then I say, "I want you to remember who you are today." Finally I tell them, "Make a difference with your life today. This school ought to be different for the honor and glory of God because you were here."

The reason I tell them that is twofold: First, if they remember who they are—that they've been created in the image of God and that they're loved—they won't be so swayed by what others say they ought to be.

Second, I want my kids to have a sense of mission. They're not in school just to learn, have fun or be with their friends. God has them there because they are going somewhere. I want them to understand that, as pilgrims and strangers in this world, they have to live life with purpose and intention.
