Fare to Nowhere
This Week's Theme: Owner or Owned?
Thursday, October 5, 2000

Key Bible Verse: Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness (2 Corinthians 9:10).
Bonus Reading:2 Corinthians 9:6-15

W. L. Douglas, the now wealthy shoe manufacturer, was once unemployed for so long that he was down to his last dollar. Nevertheless, he put half of that dollar—50 cents—in the collection basket of the church.

The next morning Douglas heard of a job in a neighboring town. The railroad fare to that town was one dollar. To all appearances it would have been wiser if he had kept that 50 cents. However with the half-dollar remaining he bought a ticket and rode halfway to the desired place. He stepped from the train and began to walk to the town.

Before he had gone one block, Douglas heard of a factory right in that town where they were hiring men. Within 30 minutes he had a job at a salary of five dollars more per week than he would have received had he gone on to the other town.

The point is that if we put God first, He'll take care of the rest. But if we give Him little or no place in our lives, we make Him powerless to help us. Remember, you can never outgive God!

—M. Norvel Young in Living Lights, Shining Stars

Respond:

What's one specific way you can put God first this week?

Thought to Apply:

God's work, done in God's way, will never lack God's supply.

—J. Hudson Taylor (China missionary, 19th century)

Adapted from Living Lights, Shining Stars (Howard, 1997).

0Prayer for the Week
