Making Friends Is Hard to Do This Week's Theme: Good Friends

Picture this:
In the first years of marriage, getting established in his job and parenthood kept Roy so busy he never thought much about friends. He didn't have time for that! But four years ago when Roy turned 40, he suddenly realized a deep longing for some "soul" brothers: a guy or two with whom he could safely confide about struggles, fears and dreams. That's when the possibility of a move from Chicago to a small town in Indiana came up. Surely, Roy thought in the deep recesses of his mind, I'll find that in Fairfield.
Now Roy has a four-minute commute! Fairfield is small and friendly and a wonderful place to rear children. However, people are still busy with Little League, work, church stuff and family obligations. So Roy is finding that connecting with other men is just as difficult here as anywhere.
Today Roy received e-mail messages from two long-ago friends who live in faraway cities. One excitedly told about the great men's group he's attending. The other casually mentioned a hiking trip he'll soon take with his accountability partners.
Roy just shakes his head. Why is it so hard for me to find friends? All I want is one or two guys to be real with. Is it me? Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just expecting too much?
Ask yourself:
How would you answer Roy's questions?
What do you think are the most common barriers to forming deep friendships among men?
What do you look for in friendships? What are your expectations?
What will you do differently this week to improve an existing friendship or develop a new relationship?
