Mike's Time Out
This Week's Theme: Overcoming Compulsions
M. Norvel Young
Wednesday, October 18, 2000

Key Bible Verse: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life (Proverbs 4:23).

Bonus Reading:2 Peter 1:3-9

You can do what one family did to protect themselves from the harmful effects of some television programs—they adopted their television.

To defend your own family, decide that any program that comes into your home has to be as family-friendly as anyone who lives there. Hold an adoption ceremony for your television.

Give the set a name, like "Mike." Make the children and adults understand that Mike will be held to the same standards as everyone else in the house. If he starts bringing stories, pictures, or language into the house that might harm other family members, Mike must take a "time out." He will be turned off for a while.

Whenever your adopted child misbehaves, immediately change the channel or turn him off. Use those occasions to tell you kids, "Those values and behaviors are not ours because they are harmful."

And explain why.

—M. Norvel Young in Living Lights, Shining Stars

Respond:

How do you handle inappropriate TV content with your children? Make a policy—and enforce it.

Thoughts to Apply:

Television is called a medium be cause so little of it is rare or well done.

—Fred Allen (radio humorist)

The tube has become a trip, a national opiate, a baby-sitter who charges nothing, something to iron by, and to shave to, and to doze over.

—Roger Mudd (writer)

Adapted from Living Lights, Shining Stars (Howard, 1997).
