Tib and I were on a 16-month writing stint in Europe in 1987, the year of the dollar devaluation. Week after week we watched the money we'd brought shrink against other currencies.

I was at my most anxious one morning when I pulled into a gas station just off a German autobahn. The dollar's latest plunge had brought fuel to the equivalent of three dollars a gallon. As I muttered to myself over the dizzy spin of the "amount due" dial, a young man ambled in my direction. With the childlike gaze of the mentally retarded, he watched me fill the tank.

As I withdrew the nozzle he drew a purse from his pocket, emptied a few coins into his hand and with clumsy fingers selected one. "Fur dich," he said. "For you." He held out a one-pfennig piece, worth less than half a U.S. cent.

"For me? But I don't need … "

I stopped short. In fact I'd just been feeling very much in need. I stood there with the gasoline hose in one hand, the little copper in the other, watching God's spokesman wander off up the street. "For you … " These are the words He speaks to each of us out of His infinite supply.
