Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2000

Chopper Free-Fall
This Week's Theme: Surviving Storms
Sunday, December 10

Key Bible Verse: And the God of all grace. … after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast (1 Peter 5:10).
Bonus Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9

Many have push-started a car. Few have done the same for a helicopter. But knowing how has saved the life of many a pilot. So important is it to know how to "push-start" a helicopter that if you go to an Air Force base, you can watch pilots practicing the procedure.

When a helicopter engine stalls in flight, the pilot lets the air rushing past the falling copter set the rotor spinning. Then when the blades are rotating fast enough, the pilot "pops the clutch." Changing the angle of the blades, the pilot uses the wind draft to reengage the engine or "flare" the rotor enough to break the aircraft's descent. The downward fall of the aircraft—as awful as it is—actually saves the pilot.

Similar dynamics may operate in our spiritual lives. We may seem to be crashing. Awful things may happen. Yet God reveals in Scripture that he can use difficulties that drop us down to the deepest depths of human experience to enable us to soar to greater heights with Him. In His providence, the Lord may even save souls by descents into the darkness of tragedy.
