A difficult time in my life revolved around the death of my mom and being called by God to leave my Tulsa pastorate to serve Him in a different capacity in Springfield, Illinois. We hadn't yet sold our house, but I had to report to work.
Earlier, I'd spoken at a revival at Southwestern State University in Oklahoma. When the Baptist student director there heard I was moving to Springfield, he told his brother, Dwight, a Springfield resident. Dwight called and offered me the room of his son, who was moving out. I don't know why, but I accepted.
When I arrived in Springfield, after an eight-hour drive, it was dark and late. I could hear two large dogs barking. As I unloaded my car, Barbara, Dwight's wife, came right over and gave me this big hug! You'd have thought we were family! Her hug was like the Lord's saying "It's going to be fine." She had three children and made me feel like the fourth. Barbara's love helped me work through my mother's death.
When some people where I worked heard where I was living, one remarked, "They're white, aren't they?" My response: "They were the last time I looked."
