Margaret Thatcher's Advice
This Week's Theme: Faithfulness to God
Tuesday, December 26

Key Bible Verse: My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast (Psalm 57:7).
Bonus Reading: Psalm 57

The psalmist didn't say, "God, get me out of this calamity and then I will have a steadfast heart." Rather, he affirmed, "I will take refuge in you right now."

British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was once invited to the White House to be honored for her friendship and support of Presidents Reagan and Bush. President Bush related a story about Thatcher during the Persian Gulf War. United States officials had been ambivalent and were beginning to think, "It's all right going in, but how are we going to get out?" They were getting estimates from the Pentagon and other places on how many casualties to expect. They were wondering how they were going to explain going into somewhere called Kuwait, which most people had to look in an atlas to find.

Margaret Thatcher called President Bush one day and said, as only she could, "George, this is no time to get wobbly." I think sometimes we need the Maggie Thatchers of this world to tell us to stop being wobbly. We need people with steadfast hearts.

[Today's Bonus Reading] gives us a wonderful example of a person who in an utterly calamitous set of circumstances was still able to say that his heart was fixed and steadfast.

—Stuart Briscoe in Secrets of the Heart

Respond:
Recall a situation when God called you to stand firm. What happened—and how did you do?

Thought to Apply: By not wavering.

—Alexander the Great (when asked how he had conquered the world)
