Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2000

Coping with the Sting
This Week's Theme: Life in Perspective
Sunday, December 31

Key Bible Verse: The sting of death is sin (1 Corinthians 15:56).
Bonus Reading: Romans 5:12-21

As I was flying from Miami to Los Angeles, it became apparent that the teenage girl in the aisle across from me was in desperate trouble. She'd been terminally ill, her mother said, for almost two years, but her family hadn't expected anything to happen this soon. The flight attendants found three doctors who worked on the young woman in a futile attempt to save her life.

When she died, the pilot landed the plane in Dallas, and all the passengers were taken from the plane. We watched as the young woman's shrouded body was carried down the steps of the 747 to a waiting hearse.

Most of the passengers in my section of the plane had been on a cruise together out of Miami. They'd come on the plane in a party mood, laughing and joking with one another.

When the passengers again boarded the plane, they were a different crowd, somber and quiet.

I informed the flight attendant that I was a pastor and if I could help I would be glad to do anything I could. "I appreciate your offer," she said, "but we've decided to give all the passengers free drinks. That ought to make them feel better." That's how the world deals with death.

Prayer for the Week:
Father, I praise you for your victory over death. Jesus, thank you for making life possible for me through your death.
