He Must Be for Real This Week's Theme: Racial Bridge-Building Raleigh Washington Sunday, December 17, 2000

Key Bible Verse: Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God (Romans:15:7). Bonus Reading:Romans:15:5-13
Between my junior and senior year, I went to ROTC summer training camp at Fort Benning. My white cubicle mate, Bill Sweet from the Citadel, understood a whole lot more about the military than I did. Before breakfast we had to have our bunks made just right, and I was having trouble getting mine squared away. "Let me do it, Raleigh," Bill said, and in three minutes he had it razor sharp.
A few weeks later, we were doing field maneuvers in 90 degree temperature when we took a mid-morning break. I was standing under a shade tree drinking from my canteen when Bill ran up. "Raleigh, give me a drink. I forgot my canteen." I reached back to get my cup out of the canteen cover to pour him some water. Bill gave me the strangest look, slapped the cup away, grabbed the canteen, pulled it straight to his mouth and took a long drink.
After graduation ceremonies from summer training camp, Bill spent an hour chasing me down so he could introduce me to his mother and father. I remember thinking, "Man, when a white guy wants me to meet his parents, he must be for real."
