Our son Arthur is a left offensive tackle on his high school football team. He comes home bruised, sore and exhausted from opening holes for running backs and protecting the quarterback. He doesn't get the gloryno flashy moves, no touchdowns.
So what motivates him to suit up day after day? He has a father in the stands who pays particular attention to number 52. And Arthur wants to see the Grizzlies succeed. He's also thankful to be healthy and on the starting lineup.
Most Christians haven't been called to be quarterbacks in God's work. We've been called to the lineto be faithful in small things, sacrifice for others, persist under difficult circumstances.
This can be tiring. So where will our encouragement come from? From remembering that our Heavenly Father sees the blocks we're making, the knocks we're sustaining; that we aren't on the line by ourselves; and that we've much to be grateful for, including Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us.
In 2001, a few will be called to carry the ball for the big play. The rest of us will lunge forward on the snap count and be caught up in the melee.
