Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2000

Recommending Jesus
This Week's Theme: Contagious Faith
Saturday, November 11 Q. How can I share Christian truth with non-Christians without sounding nutty?
A. You can't prove the existence of God, but you don't have to. You don't have to trick people into Christianity. If Jesus, once understood, doesn't draw them, nothing you add will draw them either. Tell what Jesus has done in your life.

That's not as easy as you make it sound.

Here are three steps to help:

Establish rapport. In John 4, Jesus was resting in Samaria near Jacob's well at midday. A disreputable woman came to draw water, so Jesus talked with her about water, living water. Don't answer questions no one is asking. Instead, talk to people in terms of their own interests. Then show them how Christ addresses the problems they face.

Be relevant. Paul was in Athens when he saw an altar with an inscription: To an Unknown God. So Paul said, "Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23). He was relevant and they listened. As Karl Barth said, theology is best done with a Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other.

Recommend Him. Paul told the Corinthians, "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2). That's bold!

Paul understood that if he'd stick to recommending Christ, that God would do the rest. Don't argue religion; it would be a waste of time. But do recommend Jesus Christ. Let Jesus speak for Himself.

Lord, I pray you would use me to share Christ with one person this week.
