Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2000

My Frazzle Quotient Dropped
This Week's Theme: How to Encourage
Sunday, November 19

Key Bible Verse: An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up (Proverbs 12:25).
Bonus Reading: Acts 4:36-37; 9:26-27

I got up early, piled some books in my car and left for church, hoping to do two days' work in one. By 11:00 I was frazzled. And I had two afternoon appointments, a church meeting that night, and another appointment after that. It was one of those frustrating days you just plow through with your head buried in your work.

I went downstairs to pick up my mail. Among the newspapers and junk mail was a letter from a friend. My friend began, "You're always so busy greeting parishioners and visitors after the morning service that I'm reluctant to say "Hi!" He went on to thank me for a recent sermon and to comment on how he was trying to apply it in his own life. There followed two paragraphs of encouragement about specific areas of our church life. The letter ended with "Ray, keep the faith and your thoughtful leadership going!"

When I put the letter down, a smile broke across my face, and I felt relaxed for the first time all day. My frazzle quotient dropped by 75 percent. Stress and worry were down; joy, peace and good cheer were up. And it wasn't even noon!
