Wrong Way Reigels
This Week's Theme: How to Encourage
Ken Sutterfield
Friday, November 24, 2000

Key Bible Verse: … we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God (1 Thessalonians:2:11-12a).
Bonus Reading:2 Chronicles:32:6-8

In the first half of the 1929 Georgia Tech-U. of California Rose Bowl game, Cal player Roy Reigels dealt the Georgia tailback a bone-crushing tackle, separating the ball from his arms. Roy scooped up the ball, turned and began a 90-yard sprint toward the goal. He was finally tackled from behind on the two-yard line—by his own teammate! Dazed when he hit the tailback, Roy had lost his sense of direction. On the next play, Georgia stuffed Cal in their own end zone, causing a safety.

At halftime, the stunned players and coaching staff had little to say. Reigels collapsed in a locker-room corner, his face in his hands. When the three-minute call came, the coach announced, "The same 11 who started the first half will start the second." The team moved out—all except Roy.

"Reigels!" said the head coach to the weeping player, "didn't you hear me? Get onto the field. We need you."

"I can't, Coach," Roy sobbed. "I let you and the team down and ruined the game."

The coach knelt, lifted Roy's chin, and looked him in the eyes. "Roy, the game's only half over. Get out there and play!"

Respond:

Give someone a vote of confidence.

Thought to Apply:

A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than a whole book of praise after a success.
