Report Card from the Family How Are You Doing at Home?
This Week's Theme: Leveling
Friday, February 16, 2001

Key Bible Verse: For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out (Romans 7:14b).
Bonus Reading:

Mark Sorensen, a hot commodity in the hotel business, has almost single-handedly turned around several huge corporations. Over breakfast, I asked him how he was doing at home. "You know, it's funny," Mark said with a shrug, "I have the hardest time bringing my corporate discipline home. Somehow when I resolve to change something or start something with my family, I find myself breaking my resolution—sometimes before that first day is finished."

Mark's not alone with this problem. Why? Driving home from our breakfast meeting, it hit me. At work, most of us get feedback on our performance—daily sales results, monthly financial statements—that gives us either measurable affirmation or a chance to make midcourse changes.

The next time I'm with Mark, I'll suggest that he ask his wife and his kids the same question he asks his chief financial officer month after month: "How am I doing?"

Try asking that question at home. Promise your wife and kids you won't criticize them for their answers. This'll let them know that you're committed to working hard to improve your "performance." Listen carefully and don't be defensive. Soliciting regular feedback at home will move you toward becoming a world-class husband and dad.

—Robert Wolgemuth in Daddy@Work

Respond:

Set up a biweekly or monthly check-up with your family. Keep the appointment and apply what you learn.

Thought to Apply:

It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises but only performance is reality.

—Harold S. Geneen (businessman) Adapted from Daddy@Work (Zondervan, 1999).

0Prayer for the Week

Jesus, show me the ways I need to grow as a communicator. Give me courage and discernment as I speak.
