Adopted and Accepted
This Week's Theme: Same-Sex Attraction
Monday, February 19, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Be sympathetic, love as brothers; be compassionate and humble (1 Peter 3:8b).
Bonus Reading:Job 22:29-30

I have never seen my father show affection to anyone—even my mother. He travels a lot. When he's home, he watches TV or reads—and doesn't like to be interrupted. When Dad does talk to me, it's to start an argument. But when I was 16, a family I did odd jobs for "adopted" me. Since then I've experienced the family life I'd always dreamed about.

For a while I thought I was gay because I wanted so much to receive love from a man, and misunderstood my longings. These good people helped me understand that I wasn't looking for sex but simply seeking the attention and affection I'd never received from my dad. My "adopted" dad never lectured me or tried to change me. He just hugged me, complimented me, listened to me, taught me how to do things and helped me see the good things in myself. He talked to me about my longings for intimacy and how God had created me to be a man by His perfect design.

Two years ago, a beautiful red-haired woman stole my heart. We're married now and expecting. Our baby's middle name will be that of my "Mom" or "Dad"—to say thank you to my other family.

—P. D. in Sons: A Father's Love

Respond:

Who is longing for your attention? Don't drive them to find a substitute for you.

Thought to Apply: The homosexual people I know are very much like me. They want love, respect, acceptance, companionship, significance, forgiveness.

Stanton L. Jones (psychologist and educator) Adapted from Bob Carlisle, Sons: A Father's Love (Word, 1999).

0Prayer for the Week

God, I need Your help to understand myself and others. Help me to believe You are always loving, always accepting of all sinners, even me.
