Coaching the Awesome Aztecs
This Week's Theme: Becoming a Coach
Sunday, February 25, 2001

Key Bible Verse: So I will gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well (2 Corinthians 12:15a).
Bonus Reading:2 Corinthians 11:21b-29

The local soccer league, with which our boys were signed up, called me during dinner. A shortage of coaches meant some boys wouldn't get to play—unless some fathers took a team. I started to say I was too busy. But as my family hung on my words, I agreed to coach the Awesome Aztecs.

I didn't even know what a fullback was, the offside rule remained inscrutable for most of the season, and we got clobbered our first few games. I desperately checked out soccer films and spent late evenings in frantic reading. I recruited a retired Scotsman who'd once played professionally and persuaded another father to assist.

We discovered we had some good athletes and began winning. We even went to the play-offs and played Mr. G's team. Mr. G., the founder of the league, was a perennial winner. Miracle of miracles, we were ahead 1-0 at halftime. In the third quarter Mr. G.'s team tied it up. The tie held deep into the fourth quarter when, just before time ran out, we scored!

Never coach soccer, and you'll never be humiliated as the league doormat. But you'll never know the thrill of beating Mr. G. either.

—R. Kent Hughes in Disciplines of a Godly Man

Prayer for the Week:

God, give me the grace and humility to pass on to others what You've taught me.

Adapted from Disciplines of a Godly Man (Crossway, 1991).
