Men of Integrity, Jan/Feb 2001

My Favorite Unpublished Book
This Week's Theme: Job Satisfaction
Sunday, February 4

Key Bible Verse: Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God (Ecclesiasties 5:19).
Bonus Reading: Exodus 31:1-6; 35:30-36:1

Do you ever get giddy over your work? The joy derived from a job well done carries more meaningful rewards than a paycheck. Many men know the pleasure of crafting things with their hands. They measure, hammer, plane and shape wood objects.

I never learned such skills. Yet I know the joy of sharing the gospel through writing. One of my most enjoyable tasks was writing a book about two brothers who smuggled food, supplies and Bibles into Eastern Europe before the fall of Communism. Both helped others attempt escape from Romania. These brothers hoped to let Americans know about their fellow Christians' suffering and to raise additional funds to help persecuted believers. For various reasons, publication of the book was delayed and then halted when the Romanian dictator was overthrown. It was never published!

Although I made little money working on that manuscript, I'll always remember the pleasure of writing it. I was thrilled to help relate this dramatic story of God's miraculous protection and intervention behind the Iron Curtain. It remains a highlight of my career.

Such a feeling is a gift of God. The same gift is available to every man who toils in His name.

—Ken Walker in God's Man
