Before You Take the Promotion
This Week's Theme: Job Satisfaction
David Reed
Saturday, February 10, 2001

"Congratulations, You've Been Promoted!" Your boss's words open the door to a desirable role, and you'll certainly earn more money. But should you accept? The world would automatically say "yes," because a higher position, more authority and greater wealth define an individual's worth under its value system. Followers of Christ, however, must carefully consider the impact of a promotion. Some questions to ask:

Q. Will this promotion draw me closer to Christ?

A. In some cases, a promotion may provide access to individuals or resources that may further the Kingdom of Christ. Most promotions, however, require additional responsibilities that often require more time at work and/or more travel away from home. These extra commitments may choke out Christ or loved ones.

What is my true motivation for accepting this promotion?

In Genesis 41, Pharaoh gave Joseph a big promotion indeed! Joseph obediently accepted this role because his motivation was to serve God and positively affect the Israelites, not to obtain more authority or more wealth.

How will this promotion change the content of my work?

The qualities that positioned an individual for promotion may not be the same as those required for success in a new role. Similarly, a promotion may require managing others versus doing work. Many people struggle with this transition.

Two years ago, I accepted a promotion, which, at the time, seemed like what God wanted me to do. A year later, I realized the position was not God's will for me. I humbly requested a "demotion" to my prior position. Fortunately, my employer accepted.

Many people thought I made a mistake, but others applauded my decision. Regardless of what others thought, I knew it was what God wanted me to do.
