Our church officers had a retreat once without a speaker. We just wanted to get to know one another. One elder, who had a business in which he needed to be seen as successful, opened the retreat with these words, "Guys, I want you to know that my business is falling apart and I'm scared."
We spent most of the re treat ministering to him. Officers who'd encountered similar business problems spoke to his; some just let him know they cared; still others started thinking of ways they could help him.
I had an agenda for that retreat. We were going to pray a lot, study the Scriptures a lot and encourage each other with spiritual songs. God had another agenda, and it started with this brother's honesty. We hadn't even had an opening prayer.
One of the elders came to me recently and said, "Pastor, we need to have another retreat like the one when we all got honest." He'd sensed something real at the retreat: the Spirit of God. When God's people are honest with one an other, His Spirit is always present.
If you don't have brothers in Christ with whom you can be less than "spiritual," find some.
