Michelle had been staring out the window at each passing set of headlights. She wasn't worried; 12- to 14-hour workdays had become pretty standard for Mark lately. But she was lonely and anxious to see him. Now she heard a car door close.
"Hi there, stranger!" Michelle greeted him cheerily. "Want some dinner?"
Mark returned a sagging smile, dropped his briefcase and removed his tie. "Already ate," he said. "Thanks anyway. Missed the kids again, didn't I?"
"Well it is 9:30. Ryan colored this picture for you, though. I told him you'd hang it in your office."
Admiring the multicolored scribbles, Mark shook his head. This was the third day this week he hadn't seen his son. And his six-month-old daughter seemed to barely know who he was. He peeked into the nursery and then stepped into Ryan's bedroom. "He's getting so big," Mark thought as he kissed him on the head. "Where's the time going?"
"Can I at least fix you a snack?" offered Michelle as Mark returned.
"Thanks, but I'm beat," he replied, glancing at the mail on the counter. "And I've got to catch a plane at 7:00. I just need to turn in."
