Downward Mobility
This Week's Theme: Job Satisfaction
Thursday, February 8, 2001

Key Bible Verse: The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts (1 Samuel 2:7).
Bonus Reading:John 3:27-30

Mike had given his life to his company. He succeeded in almost everything he did. He was rewarded by promotion after promotion. Finally he became president and chief executive officer of the company. His first two years at the pinnacle were rocky, but successful. Then he made a series of bold, strategic moves which damaged the company financially. After several months of trying to pull the company through the difficulties, he was asked to resign. It was as though his entire life was being torn apart. Embarrassment and a sense of failure engulfed him.

Mike decided that this was God at work in his life. He graciously stepped aside, helping his successor get started. He was offered the leadership of a major division of the company. Quite a step down. Rather than allowing himself to be come bitter or discouraged, he took the new position with energy and gusto. His respect grew significantly within the company, and others observed him overcome adversity and serve the company rather than himself.

Position is good, necessary and valued. But every position is temporary. Loss of position is inevitable. Only the timing's in question. So it's a mistake to let position define who we are.

—Jerry White in Dangers Men Face

Respond:

How do you measure your own worth? Ask God to give you a proper perspective on the importance of your job.

Thought to Apply:

There's no labor a man can do that's undignified—if he does it right.

—Bill Cosby (comedian) Adapted from Dangers Men Face (NavPress, 1997).
