Lonely Trapline
This Week's Theme: Transformed Life
Tuesday, January 9, 2001

Key Bible Verse: [H]is Son … was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead ().
Bonus Reading:).

I was out checking my trapline on Assinika Lake. My son was to follow. I set beaver snares, checked my fish net and gathered firewood. Returning to the cabin, I found men from my village. They told me my son had locked himself in a closet and hung himself.

When I got home, my wife was wailing bitterly, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived to take the body for investigation. After the funeral, I headed into the wilderness and wandered, but—constantly reminded of my son who used to trap with me—I found no peace.

One night at the cabin, I picked up the Bible. As I read [today's Key Bible Verse], I became fearful. I closed my eyes and saw a man walking in darkness. Then he returned, walking in bright light. I realized that man was me, that I must choose. I'd lived a life of drinking and speaking evil. My son had followed my ways. I now wanted to leave them.

I went to the church leaders. We prayed. I confessed all my sins. When I got up, I knew Jesus had saved me from destruction. In the years since, He's helped me walk in the light.

Respond:

Is God talking to you? He can take all the bad you have ever done in your life and give you a fresh, clean start. Just tell him and he will come to you.

Thought to Apply:

I can contribute nothing to my own salvation, except the sin from which I need to be redeemed.

—William Temple (Anglican minister, 20th century) Adapted from Mark Ward, Sr., The Conquering Indian (Indian Life, 1994).
