Marine Cares for His Nurse
This Week's Theme: Building Solid Marriages
Friday, January 19, 2001

Key Bible Verse: It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it (Ecclesiasties 5:5).
Bonus Reading:Deuteronomy 23:21-23

When Bill Sublett first met his future wife, he thought "an angel just came out of heaven." A U.S. Marine who'd been freed from a Japanese prison camp in World War II, Sublett weighed 82 pounds and suffered from beriberi—intestinal parasites.

His doctors had gently told him to prepare for death, but a beautiful nurse named Loraine prayed at his bedside for his recovery. He credits Loraine with saving his life.

Fifty-five years later, Bill is returning the favor. Loraine suffers from Alzheimer's. Bill shares her room at the Big Spring, Virginia, Medical Center. "I promised I'd never leave her, and I'd be a liar if I did. She saved my life. I want to do the best I can for her."

Keeping a wedding vow isn't always easy. Sometimes we may actually have to give more than we get—perhaps due to a wife's illness. Emotional or even spiritual factors could prevent wives from displaying the kind of affection a man desires. At such times, it's good for men to review the vows they once made. We need to honor our words. Just as God is faithful to you regardless of life's circumstances, so should you be to your marital vows.

—Stand Firm

Respond:

Today, tell your wife how glad you are to have her. Restate the vows you made to her on your wedding day.

Thought to Apply:

There is nothing more lovely in life than the union of two people whose love for one another has grown through the years from the small acorn of passion into a great rooted tree.

—Vita Sackville-West (writer) Adapted from Stand Firm (6/00).

0Prayer for the Week

Jesus, you are the great healer and restorer. Bind my family together. If I have suffered because of divorce, I ask you to heal our family from its pain and destruction. Please renew our hope.
