If I Had Intervened This Week's Theme: Molding Men Wally Kroeker Sunday, January 21, 2001
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: The Lord looked and was
appalled that there was no one to intervene (Isaiah 59:15b-16a). Bonus Reading:Exodus 18:13-26
I was aghast to read in the paper that my friend Russell had been charged with embezzlement. Later that day we met over coffee. For five years, Russell rose rapidly in his profession and adjusted his life style to support his image. Then in a cash-flow pinch, he "borrowed" someone else's assets, dipped into another account to pay back the first, and so on.
As he described his plight it dawned on me that I hadn't been a good friend to Russell. I should have mentioned something when I noticed him be coming consumed by his work, when he stopped coming to some of the church events we used to attend together. I might have confronted him on his increasingly overheated lifestyle and upscale tastes.
Someone needs to tell us, as Jethro told his son-in-law Moses [in today's Bonus Reading], "What you are doing is not good." That kind of intervention may be seen as a threat to privacy. But isn't that an essential part of Christian mutual support?
When it came to Russell, I didn't intervene. If I had, maybe his life wouldn't be in tatters as he waits to find out how long he'll be a guest of the government.
