Key Bible Verse: And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others (2 Timothy 2:2), Bonus Reading: Titus 2:1-15
A few years ago, I'd never heard of discipling or follow-up. But because a few other men under stood and practiced these terms, today I am the fifth in a direct line of discipleship. Here's how it happened.
More than 20 years ago, Dick Semaan asked Len Benckenstein to attend a Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in Houston. The speaker was an officer of the USS Pueblo, whose crew was captured and tortured by the North Koreans. The officer observed that those who depended on Christ had a deeper inner well that sustained not only themselves, but others. As the officer presented the gospel, Len "heard it" for the first time. He answered the call of the gospel that day.
Dick and Len started meeting for Operation Timothya weekly one-on-one Bible study.
Several years later, Len met Dick Ellis at a large, weekly breakfast Bible study group for Christian businessmen. After a few months Len invited Dick to meet with him one-on-one. Over the next year, Len challenged Dick to look for a man he, too, could help. Len called this the principle of reproduction.
Frank R. Coats in Discipleship Journal Respond:
Who has helped you? Whom can you help? Thought to Apply: Christianity is unquestionably a personal experience. It is also unquestionably not a private experience.
