My Spiritual Family Tree–Part 2
This Week's Theme: Molding Men
Frank R. Coats
Tuesday, January 23, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom (Colossians 3:16a).
Bonus Reading:Acts 18:24-28

Len drew Dick's attention to a man from their larger group named Bob Blitz. Bob had attended the Bible study for nine years. Now, at a hard point in his marriage, he was ready to meet individually with Dick. Two years after hooking up with Dick, Bob began to look around for someone to disciple.

That's when I, Frank Coats, came into the picture. When I first attended the Bible study group, I was yearning for meaning in my life and was shocked by how open some of the men were with their struggles. I'd never seen that. I wanted to be part of it.

After a few months in the big group, I started meeting with Bob. I'd grown up in the church but had never understood what "Jesus died for you" meant. I was able to ask Bob questions I hadn't felt free to ask when I was a kid. Bob taught me how to rely on Scripture for answers. He became a friend I could open up to and trust.

Thanks to Bob's encouragement, I now meet with my own "Timothy." I'm sure one day I'll hear him say, "Guess who wants to meet with me one to one!"

—Frank R. Coats in Discipleship Journal

Respond:

Rejoice that you can be part of God's ministry to men! Consider meeting with someone regularly.

Thought to Apply:

Christianity can be condensed into four words: admit, submit, commit, and transmit.
