Father Figures This Week's Theme: Molding Men James C. Perkins Thursday, January 25, 2001
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow (Isaiah 1:17). Bonus Reading:
Male mentoring has enriched the lives of countless youngsters and single parents in Greater Christ Baptist Church (Detroit) and the surrounding community. This program grew out of a concern for the intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of elementary school-age boys growing up without the consistent presence and guidance of a father figure. It allows them to come in contact with African American males of various professions and trades, primarily recruited from the congregation, on a weekly basis to bolster their confidence and aspiration levels.
In the weekly meetings, mentors lead discussions on topics such as self-esteem, decision making and goal setting. The youngsters memorize Bible verses; adult males lead discussions and role-plying exercises on how these verses apply to their lives. Boys and their assigned mentors also listen to presentations by visiting speakers on topics such as combating drug abuse and violence in the community. They together enjoy periodic group field trips to a local museum or recreation spot.
The mentors give the youngsters a chance to connect with someone who cares about them and their future.
James C. Perkins in Building Up Zion's Walls Respond:
Pray about ways God could use you in the life of another man or boy.
Thought to Apply:
It is easier to build a boy than to mend a man.
