Craig spent his workdays at the supermarket being told what to do, where to go and what to say as he stocked shelves, broke down cardboard boxes and packed other people's stuff into brown paper bags. He hated his job but he liked the hours, ending at midnight.
As soon as he got home, he hopped online, still wide awake. That's when his real life began. He could don the mantle of an all-knowing, all-powerful wizard. Or maybe be a highly intelligent, puckish elf. He played with a devil-may-care attitude, blowing off steam, being crazy.
Lately, though, Craig had begun spending more of his computing time in a variety of Internet chat rooms. There, he could meet others, engage in verbal sparring on a wide range of topicsall while playing a character entirely of his own creation. On the computer, he had complete freedom. He was free to answer whatever questions he wanted, however he wanted, with whatever information he wantedreal or imagined.
More and more, he viewed himself in terms of his online persona. That was the real Craig. "Craig, the supermarket stock clerk" was the fantasy.
