While working as a disc jockey several years ago, the station that employed me sponsored a Halloween haunted house. It was really, really scary. I don't much like scary events to begin with, but I had to work the promotion several nights. Interestingly, in the dark and cool of the night, I found the blood, gore, noises and pouncing goblins way too much for me. But one day, I had to arrive at the haunted house earlier to do my show from there. I walked around the house in full daylight. I saw the little corners from whence ghouls jumped. I saw how the hangman's stunt worked. That which I had found ever so frightening was hardly of interest in the daylight. Further, my daylight tour took the fright out of the nighttime. I knew how everything worked.
When we've made enough progress in faithfully doing little things in our outer life, the Holy Spirit will cast a light on formerly dark places within us. This is the time where we are free to boldly ask ourselves what we fear, what makes us anxious.
