A team that's tight. That's what Central Florida high school football coach Greg Register believes it takes. He had a dismal season in 1998 (3-7). Although the team was loaded with talent, one-upsmanship and put-downs prevailed.
So for the '99 season, Coach Register announced a focus on increasing teamwork and bringing fun back to the game. He scheduled a summer team campout instead of extra practices. Encouraged to become friends, players of different racial backgrounds began hanging out in each other's homes after school, doing homework, sleeping over if the hour got late.
While organizing cookouts and tailgate parties, parents got to know each other, too. Fathers began to mentor other fathers' sons. Mothers served breakfasts to other mothers' boys. Fights and delinquency ceased because players knew they were being monitored by a community of adults who cared about them.
After early losses, the team went 8-3 for the season. They gave it all they had because they couldn't bear to disappoint their best friends. Now the Oviedo Lions are entering the quarterfinals of the 6A state play-offs and aiming for the championship.

Where do you see disunity? Can you help? Thought to Apply:
[A true community's] members are making the transition from "the community for myself" to "myself for the community."
