When Los Angeles International Airport police threatened to arrest Jews for Jesus workers for passing out literature there, attorney Jay Sekulow thought, "What's the big deal?" They'd been distributing for 14 years, along with everyone from the Moonies to the Hare Krishnas.
But the opposition was determined to shut down the Christian witness. Many people felt that God wanted Jay on the case. At the same time, sudden changes in regulation caused the collapse of Jay's real estate business. So he plunged into the airport case, eager to show the commissioners that Christians weren't pushovers.
Jay was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Growing up in the synagogue, he knew how to keep Sabbath and attended Hebrew School. From his reading of the Old and New Testaments, Jay found Jesus as his personal Messiah. As 18-year-old Jay listened to the Liberated Wailing Wall, a Jews for Jesus singing group, he was moved to personal commitment.
In March 1987, Jay successfully defended the case before the Supreme Courtand went on to become co-leader of the American Center for Law and Justice.
