Pinned Down by German Artillery
This Week's Theme: Our Protector and Provider
Thomas Fleming
Thursday, April 19, 2001

Key Bible Verse: "Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him" (Psalm 91:14).
Bonus Reading:Psalm 37:1-20

Crack-shot Tennessee mountaineer Alvin York got his World War I draft notice and prayed in anguish until assured of God's protection. "I know now I'll be back," he told friends.

In France, over 500 Americans were trapped in a valley by German artillery on a ridge. As York's 82nd Division attacked, machine gun fire cut down the entire first wave. Corporal York's company, in the second wave, began losing men too. York and 16 others worked around the enemy's flank, rushed a major's command shack and took dozens captive. A counterattack killed or wounded 10. Bullets hissed so close to York they burned his face. York fearlessly fired uphill, toppling gunner after gunner until none dared raise his head to fire. One by one he calmly picked off nine soldiers dispatched to kill him. Stunned, the major ordered his battalion to surrender. As York and the six unwounded Americans marched them to their own lines, others surrendered—making 132 captives! The bodies of 28 killed by York were found on the ridge. He wrote in his diary, "God did help me … for the bushes were shot off all around me and I never got a scratch."

—Thomas Fleming in Lights Along the Way

Respond:

Recall a time when you sensed God's protection in your life.

Thought to Apply:

Not to fear is the armor.

—Ulrich Zwingli (Swiss religious reformer, 16th century)Adapted from: Lights Along the Way (Morehouse, 1999).

Thanks, Lord, for supplying all I really need and shielding me from all that would truly harm.
