As quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Randall Cunningham won the Maxwell Club's Player of the Year Award twice, in 1988 and 1990. But by the mid-90's he was forced into a backup role and then retired from football.
But in 1997 Cunningham was back, this time as a reserve for the Minnesota Vikings. Surprisingly, the 1998 season found him on top again, winning the Maxwell Player of the Year for the third time.
Q. What have you learned from competing in the NFL?
A. I've learned you can be as competitive as anyone in the league without a lot of anger. Man's anger doesn't bring about the righteousness God requires. When you can do things with patience, and your coaching staff allows it, you can accomplish a lot. Peter talks [1 Peter 5:5] about God opposing the proud. Right after that, he says to "humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time."
The Lord doesn't want us to be anxious about things. Peter goes on to say "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
If I go into a game very anxious, I leave it in the shower room, where I go to pray. I say, "Lord, I'm casting all my cares on you. I'm leaning on You. I'm submitting to you. Send me Your Spirit to lead me in the right way. Help me to be the best that I can be for You and for this team."
Through patience and casting all my anxiety on Him, I've learned that I can accomplish so much more.
Randall Cunningham now plays quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
