Get Back in the Saddle?
This Week's Theme: Becoming a Coach
Thursday, March 1, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Be men of courage; be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13b).
Bonus Reading:1 Timothy 3:4-5; Titus 1:6

Aman stood at the feedback time of our men's session. He said, "I got real lazy about this issue of leadership. I let my wife discipline the kids. I wasn't initiating anything when it came to the two of us having fun together. I didn't take interest in the house so my wife had to keep reminding me about things that had to be done.

"Then a few months ago she sat me down and read the riot act. She told me I'd stopped being the man she married. She wasn't interested in being my mother or my maid. So I had a serious decision to make. Either get back in the saddle and be what our family needed, or there could be some drastic changes.

"So I went out and talked to some guys that seemed to have it together, and they've been kind of mentoring me. It's been hard. Once you get out of the habit, nothing comes easily. But she was right. And our marriage is coming back to life."

—Gordon MacDonald in When Men Think Private Thoughts

Respond:

Have you stepped up to the coaching function in your family?

Thought to Apply:

The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.

— John Ruskin (English art critic and writer, 19th century) Adapted from: Living by God's Surprises (Word, 1988).

0Prayer for the Week

God, give me the grace and humility to pass on to others what You've taught me.
