Test for Suitors
This Week's Theme: Consistency for Kids
Friday, March 16, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect (1 Peter 3:7a).
Bonus Reading:John 19:25-27

I will never forget our oldest daughter's first date. As the young man came to pick her up at our house, I stood—with the other four family members— behind the dining room curtains, and sneaked a look to see if he would see her to her side of the car and open the door for her. I'd told my three daughters that if the young men who came to date them didn't pass their first test—opening the door of the car to seat them—they were history. The whole family held its breath. He did it. He passed! He's now her husband and our son-in-law.

My three daughters and one son see me open doors for their mother, help her on with her coat, walk on the street side of the sidewalk, carry heavy grocery bags for her, wash the kitchen floor, vacuum the house. Our three daughters have grown up expecting men to treat them this way.

Our son will hopefully repeat what he sees his father practice—chivalry, respect and self-restraint, all of which protect a woman's sense of honor and femininity.

Come on, men, let's do it, and make our homes, churches, communities and workplaces a safe haven for women!

—Steve Masterson in Out of the Locker Room

Respond:

What are your kids learning from seeing you in action?

Thought to Apply:

Children have more need of models than of critics.

—Joseph Joubert (French moralist, 18th century) Adapted from: Out of the Locker Room (Horizon, 1991).

0Prayer for the Week

God, I need Your help every day to be a good father. Thanks for the challenge of my kids.
