"Free" Fall
This Week's Theme: Repenting
Monday, March 19
Key Bible Verse: To his sin he adds rebellion; scornfully he claps his hands among us and multiplies his words against God (Job 34:37). Bonus Reading: John 3:19-21
On October 22, 1999, Jan Davis jumped off the edge of El Capitan, a 3,200-foot granite cliff in Yosemite National Park, and fell to her death when her parachute failed to deploy. Davis, a veteran jumper, was participating in an "extreme sport" leaping from cliffs and towerscalled base jumping.
Davis knew that base jumping was illegal inside Yosemite. She was one of five parachutists protesting the park's policy by jumping to prove the sport's safety. She failed to make her point. The law had been adopted after six other deaths at Yosemite. These protesters knew the law and broke it.
What is it about us humans? If someone tells us we can't do something, we want to all the more. We buck authority, test legal limits, crave freedom from rules. All the while, our society celebrates the rebel, calling him "his own man" or a "free spirit."
But the Bible makes clear that there's no such thing as a "free spirit." Our spirits are shackled by slavery to sin. Freedom comes only through submitting ourselves to the authority of Jesus Christ. If you haven't surrendered to Christ, you're not "your own man"; you're a slave.
Stand Firm
Respond:
Engaged in a battle of wills with God? Why not let him take over and bring harmony to your life?
Thought to Apply:
The far country is not hard to find. You don't have to go to Las Vegas. It is rebellion against the Word and will of God.
Vance Havner (preacher)
