What Broke the Deadlock
This Week's Theme: Repenting
Tuesday, March 20

Key Bible Verse: We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:12).
Bonus Reading: Colossians 1:19-23

During 30 years of counseling, I kept a large copy of Salvador Dali's Christ of St. John of the Cross hanging on the wall. Instead of looking up at the cross from ground level, this unusual painting looks down from above. The massive cross looms over the whole world, and Jesus is pictured as young and strong, holding back the surrounding darkness. Earth, sky and sea are lit by light streaming from the cross.

There were hundreds of occasions when counselees seemed to reach an impasse. Sometimes it was memories of sins against them which kept them from moving on. Other times it was guilt and shame from their own sins.

Whenever we reached that place, I always turned to the painting and asked the person to join me in focusing attention on it. Sometimes there would be several minutes of silence. I knew that if only the meaning and message of that scene would get through to them, things could change, because everything looks different in the light of the cross. Times without number, that sight and that light broke the deadlock, and became the turning point in the process of healing.

—David A. Seamands in Healing Meditations for Life

Respond:
There's nothing you've done not already paid for by Jesus' blood. Ask God to help you believe that.

Thought to Apply:
Salvation is free but not cheap. The gift of God cost God His Son, His life.

—Vance Havner (preacher and evangelist)

Adapted from: Healing Meditations for Life (Victor, 1996).

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Father, You sent Your Son to overcome the power of sin. Please make me clean—and help me to be free from my sin.
