They Began to Probe
This Week's Theme: Friends to Keep
Wednesday, March 28, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses (Proverbs 27:6a).
Bonus Reading:Psalm 141:5

I have a huddle I meet with on Wednesday mornings. These men are my lifeline. I leave them encouraged, convicted and hopeful I can do what's needed, because they're squarely behind me, urging me on in Christlikeness.

I'll never forget when I came to my group and shared the frustrations concerning my communication with my wife, Nancy. They began to lovingly probe me and pointed out that I was traveling over half the time. They also pointed out that communication was tough because I would "veg out" at home and not take the time to talk.

I defended myself, but they put the ball squarely back into my court. They said, "Rod, you didn't make the vow 'Till death do us part' to Promise Keepers, but you did to Nancy. Don't you think it's time to change?"

They were right. They've helped me take time out with Nancy, as well as showed me how to cut back on my schedule to stay home more—to be a Promise Keeper.

They didn't let up on me. At the same time they helped me in the process. These men hold me accountable, not by shaking fingers at me but by locking arms with me.

—Rodney L. Cooper in Shoulder to Shoulder

Respond:

Is there someone in your life you can entrust with the responsibility of holding you accountable?

Thought to Apply:

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.

—Ralph Waldo Emerson (philosopher, writer, 19th century) Adapted from: Shoulder to Shoulder (Zondervan, 1997).

0Prayer for the Week

God, I need Your people to help me know You better. Give me courage to be honest and vulnerable.
