Teenager with a Thirst
This Week's Theme: The Bible
Wednesday, March 7, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long (Psalm 119:97).
Bonus Reading:Psalm 119:97-104

At the age of 9 or 10, Henry Ironside heard someone tell how he had made it a practice to read the Bible through every year. He decided to try it. The more he read, the more fascinated he became with the Scripture narratives. At age 14, he "caught up with himself," as he described it. He'd completed reading the entire Bible 14 times!

And what became of the teenager with a thirst to know God's Word? Had you lived a century ago, you'd probably know the answer, for Harry became known as H. A. Ironside, one of his day's most prominent preachers. His name was affixed to over 100 books, mostly commentaries on the Book he'd so grown to love. Thousands of men and women were mesmerized by his grasp of Scripture and listened spellbound as he related the Scriptures in simple, ordinary language.

Question: Have you ever read the Bible from cover to cover? "Well, that would take a long, long time," you may be thinking. Not so long. If you are an average reader, and took just 15 minutes a day to read, you'd read four to five chapters a day; in eight months you'd have read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

—Harold J. Sala in Heroes

Respond:

Have you ever read through the Bible?

Thought to Apply:

A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.

—Theodore Roosevelt (26th American president) Adapted from: Heroes (Promise, 1998).
