Concealed Weapon
This Week's Theme: The Bible
Charles Colson
Thursday, March 8, 2001

Key Bible Verse: "Is not my word like fire," declares the Lord, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?" (Jeremiah 23:29).
Bonus Reading:Isaiah 55:10-11

In 1978 interviewer David Frost invited me to debate well-known atheist Madelyn Murray O'Hair for nationwide television before a live New York audience. Before the taping I studied transcripts of Mrs. O'Hair's past encounters with believers. I learned that while she appeared to quote the Bible to support her militant anti-Christian views, she craftily used passages out of context and subtly rearranged words to change their meaning. So I decided to take my Bible to the debate.

Mrs. O'Hair scored her blows early, spitting invectives at Christians and aggressively interrupting. I kept my Bible unobtrusively at my side, but when she shouted, "The Bible teaches you to kill," I leaned across a startled David Frost and thrust it at her. "Wait a minute! You know this book, Mrs. O'Hair. Find where it says that. Read it to me."

She blanched, for a moment groped for words, then drew back in her chair shaking her head furiously. I thrust the leather-covered book toward her once more. She recoiled again. With that, the tide of the confrontation was turned, and she seemed subdued and on the defensive.

Respond:

Arm yourself with Scripture by choosing one passage and committing it to memory.

Thought to Apply:

The Bible is the only thing that can combat the devil. Quote the Scriptures and the devil will run.

—Billy Graham (evangelist)Adapted from: Loving God (Zondervan, 1983).
