Dad's Dedication This Week's Theme: The Bible

Key Bible Verse: Do not forget the things your eyes have seen
Teach them to your children (Deuteronomy 4:9b). Bonus Reading:Deut. 11:18-21
Chaplain and author Ben Patterson has described a unique gift he's given each of his four children:
"I work my Bible to shreds about every four years. So when we had our first child, I decided to dedicate my new Bible to him. Right now I'm working on my third Bible like this. Before I open my Bible to do my devotions, I pray for the child for whom this Bible is dedicated.
"While I am working through the Scriptures, I write notes to him in the margins, telling him how much this verse means to me, or informing him of a prayer I offered for him while reading this text."
And when the Bible is completely worn and filled with jottings, "I present it to him as a special gift from his father."
What gifts do you enjoy giving your kids? Forget the financial side of things. Lewis Smedes writes that a "true gift comes with a giver attached." Time, wisdom, effort and attention are the best gifts you'll ever give a child.
Fathers in ancient Israel were urged not only to treasure spiritual experiences, but to "teach them to[our] children and to their children after them."
Stand Firm
Respond:
What kinds of wisdom and experiences are you passing on to your kids?
Thought to Apply:
The Bible should be taught so early and so thoroughly that it sinks straight to the bottom of the mind.
