Key Bible Verse: Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise" (Luke 10:37).
Bonus Reading:Luke 10:25-37

Shortly after coming to America, Jill and I made our first drive to Chicago, to speak at a downtown hotel. It was pouring rain. I knew my gas was low but was sure I'd spot a filling station. Wrong! I ran out—in the fast lane, in rush hour.

I had no idea what to do but I got out, and immediately my suit was drenched. Everyone wound down their window and told me exactly what they thought of me. A beat-up old car came along, and the window went down. I'd quit listening, so had no idea what the man said. I stood there a long time, drenched.

Then this same beat-up car came around again. The driver pulled up, jumped out, lifted the trunk and got out a gallon can from his trunk, poured it into my tank, and, without saying a word, put the cap back on and turned to leave.

"Hold it!" I said. "What's going on?"

"No speak English."

He did speak enough English that I discovered he'd arrived from Puerto Rico a week before. He'd seen my plight, gone off the freeway to buy gas, and worked his way back around to us. He didn't want me to repay him. "Nobody helps nobody in this city," he said.

Respond:

How can I be a true neighbor to someone today?

Thought to Apply:

It's not the able that give, but the desirous. No da el que puede, sino el que quiere.
