Dear Lindsey: I'm happy that you got the internship. You're definitely building a good resume, so now's a good time to remind you of something important: While Mom and I are impressed with your accomplishments, we're proud of you for the kind of person you are. Over the years, whenever you received an award, we said we were excited for you. We'd have been proud of you whether or not you received the prize.
Many people make the mistake of defining success by their accomplishments, or their awards, or their bank balance. Don't ever define success by such terms.
Lindz, I want you to enjoy a sense of satisfaction as you work diligently on a daily basis to achieve your goals.
If you're growing closer to God, that's success. If you're becoming more prepared for your career, that's success.
If you're developing strong friendships, that's success. These are worthwhile goals, so the pursuit of them is success in itself.
We're impressed and excited about your internshipthat's an accomplishment. But even more, we're proud of who you are and who you're becomingthat's success.
Love, Dad
