Trying to Be Somebody Else
This Week's Theme: Pacing Yourself
Peter Deion
Friday, June 1, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training (1 Corinthians 9:25).
Bonus Reading:1 Cor. 9:24-27)

John Wesley was the ultimate itinerant preacher, covering more than 250,000 miles on horseback or by carriage. And when it was 10:00 p.m., he'd excuse himself by telling his host that he had to go to bed because he had an appointment to keep at 4:00 the next morning.

I remember hearing that and thinking, "Wow, that must be the secret of what it means to become a man of God." So I decided I'd do what Wesley did. But since 4:00 a.m. seemed rather early, I decided to try 5:00. I set the alarm, got up, moved into the study, sat down at my desk to have this fabulous meeting with God, opened up my Bible, and dug in. The next thing I remember was waking up—at 8:00.

I decided not to let that discourage me. So, I thought I'd try 5:30. Next morning I got up at 5:30, opened my Bible, and started writing. The next thing I knew, I'd scribbled down to the bottom of my page.

My wife started gently telling me that the real problem was not when I got up but rather when I went to bed. The point is that we must be realistic about our schedule and sleep needs.

—Peter Deion in The Priority of Knowing God

Respond:

I've decided that the best time for me to meet with God is. … I'll adjust my schedule accordingly.

Thought to Apply:

I wasted time, and now time doth waste me.

—William Shakespeare (English playwright, 16th century)
